Chapter 18

  • Use the Bullets button to insert bullets before specific paragraphs of text and use the Numbering button to insert numbers.
  • Insert custom numbers or letters by clicking the Numbering button arrow and then clicking the desired option at the drop-down list.
  • Define your own numbering format with options at the Define New Number Format dialog box. Display this dialog box by clicking the Numbering button arrow and then clicking Define New Number Format at the drop-down gallery.
  • Insert custom bullets by clicking the Bullets button arrow and then clicking the desired option at the drop-down list.
  • Define your own custom bullet with options at the Define New Bullet dialog box. Display this dialog box by clicking the Bullets button arrow and then clicking Define New Bullet at the drop-down gallery.
  • Apply numbering to multilevel paragraphs of text by clicking the Multilevel List button in the Paragraph group in the Home tab.
  • Define your own multilevel list numbering format with options at the Define new Multilevel list dialog box. Display this dialog box by clicking the Multilevel List button and then clicking Define New Multilevel List at the drop-down gallery.
  • When you type a multilevel list, press the Tab key to move to the next level and press Shift + Tab to move to the previous level.
  • Insert special characters and symbols with options at the Symbol dialog box with the Special Characters tab selected, by typing a sequence of characters, or with keyboard shortcuts.
  • Use the © symbol to identify copyrighted intellectual property, use the ™ symbol to identify a trademark, and use the ® symbol to identify a registered trademark.
  • You can insert regular, optional, and nonbreaking hyphens in a document, as well as en-dashes and em-dashes.
  • Insert a nonbreaking hyphen by clicking the Nonbreaking Hyphen option at the Symbol dialog box with the Special Characters tab selected or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + -.
  • Use an em-dash to indicate a break in a thought or a shift in tone in a sentence. To insert an em-dash, type a word, type two hyphens, type the next word, and press the spacebar. You can also insert an em-dash with the keyboard shortcut Alt + Ctrl + - (on the numeric keypad) or at the Symbol dialog box with the Special Characters tab selected.
  • Use an en-dash to indicate inclusive dates, times, or numbers. To insert an en-dash, click the En Dash option at the Symbol dialog box with the Special Characters tab selected or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + - (on the numeric keypad).
  • Insert a nonbreaking space between words that you do not want separated on two lines. Insert a nonbreaking space by clicking the Nonbreaking Space option at the Symbol dialog with the Special Characters tab selected or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + spacebar.
  • Use the Find feature to find special characters or the Find and Replace feature to find special characters and replace them with other characters or text. Click the Special button at the Find and Replace dialog box to display a pop-up list of special characters.
