Chapter 21

  • Word provides a number of predesigned building blocks you can use to help build a document.
  • Insert building blocks at the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box. Display the dialog box by clicking the Quick Parts button in the Insert tab and then clicking Building Blocks Organizer at the drop-down list.
  • The Building Blocks Organizer dialog box provides a single location where you can view all available predesigned and custom designed building blocks.
  • Sort building blocks at the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box by clicking the desired column heading.
  • You can save selected data as a new building block by selecting the text, clicking the Quick Parts button in the Insert tab, and then clicking Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery. At the Create New Building Block dialog box, specify a name, category, building block description, and location for saving the building block.
  • By default, building blocks you create are saved in the Building Blocks.dotx template.
  • Insert a building block by displaying the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box, clicking the desired building block, and then clicking the Insert button. You can also insert a custom building block by clicking the Insert tab, clicking the Quick Parts button, and then clicking the custom building block at the drop-down gallery.
  • Edit a building block with options at the Modify Building Block dialog box. Display this dialog box by displaying the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box, clicking the desired building block, and then clicking the Edit Properties button.
  • A building block you create is available at the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box as well as in the Quick Parts drop-down gallery.
  • Delete a building block by displaying the Building Blocks Organizer dialog box, clicking the building block, clicking the Delete button, and then clicking Yes at the confirmation question.
  • Fields are placeholders for data that you can insert with options at the Field dialog box, which provides a single location for accessing all fields provided by Word. Display the Field dialog box by clicking the Quick Parts button and then clicking Field.
  • Fields in a document are updated automatically when you open the document. You can update a field manually by clicking the field and then clicking the Update tab, pressing F9, or right-clicking the field and then clicking Update.
