Restrict formatting and editing in a document and apply a password to it with options at the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane. Display this task pane by clicking the Review tab and then clicking the Protect Document button in the Protect group.
Restrict the formatting by specifying styles that are allowed and not allowed in a document. Do this at the Formatting Restrictions dialog box. Display this dialog box by clicking the Settings hyperlink in the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane.
To restrict editing in a document, click the Allow only this type of editing in the document option at the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane, click the down-pointing arrow at the right of the options box, and then click the desired option.
Enforce editing and formatting restrictions by clicking the Yes, Start Enforcing Protection button in the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane and make changes to what is allowed at the Start Enforcing Protection dialog box.
Protect a document with a password by using options at the Start Enforcing Protection dialog box or by using options at the General Options dialog box.
Specify a document as read-only with options at the General Options dialog box.
Modify document properties at the document information panel. Display this panel by clicking the Office button, pointing to Prepare, and then clicking Properties.
Inspect a document for personal data, hidden data, and metadata with options at the Document Inspector dialog box. Display this dialog box by clicking the Office button, pointing to Prepare, and then clicking Inspect Document at the side menu.
Insert a password in a document to ensure that the document is opened only by someone who knows the password. Insert the password at the Encrypt Document dialog box, which you can display by clicking the Office button, pointing to Prepare, and then clicking Encrypt Document.
Apply a digital signature to a document to vouch for its authenticity. Once a digital signature is applied to a document, the document is locked and cannot be edited or changed without first removing the digital signature.
Insert a signature line in a document to specify who should sign the document. Insert a signature line with options at the Signature Setup dialog box. To display this dialog box, click the Insert tab and then click the Signature Line button in the Text group.
Mark a document as final by saving it as a read-only file, clicking the Office button, pointing to Prepare, and then clicking Mark as Final. Typing, editing commands, and proofing marks are turned off when a document is marked as final.
Run the compatibility checker to check your document and identify elements that are not supported or will act differently in previous versions of Word. To determine the compatibility of the features in your document, click the Office button, point to Prepare, and then click Run Compatibility Checker at the side menu.
