Listen as your teacher previews the story and makes predictions about what will happen in “The All-American Slurp.” Then listen to the first three paragraphs and make your own prediction about what you think will happen at dinner. Turn to a person sitting next to you and share your ideas. Does you partner have similar ideas?
Listen carefully as your teacher reads pages 48 and 49 aloud. Follow along with your eyes on the words as your teacher reads. When your teacher stops reading on page 49 at the big “M,” turn to your partner and summarize what has happened so far. Then make a prediction about what the narrator will do next. Do you think the narrator’s family will invite the Gleasons to dinner at their house? Read the next section of the story silently, summarize the section, and make new predictions about what will happen. Read and stop in this manner until you reach the end of the story. One of your predictions at each stop should answer this question: Do the Gleasons and the Lins ever get together for dinner again?
If you are having trouble making predictions, use the Guided Reading Questions on each page after you stop. Find the answer to each question and read it aloud before continuing to read the next section silently.
When you finish reading, make a list of the predictions you made. Next to each prediction, list details in the story that led you to make the prediction. Describe how your predictions changed as you went along. Then share your predictions with the whole class.
