Before Reading

Build Background Knowledge

Make a list of things you know about Robin Hood. Next, read the Prereading information on page 73. Add more things about Robin Hood to your list. Then create a Graphic Organizer like the one on page 73 so you can keep track of Robin Hood’s courageous actions.

During Reading

Gather Information

As you read, write down Robin Hood’s actions onto your Graphic Organizer. Use the Guided Reading Questions to help you gather information about ways in which Robin Hood helped and inspired others.

Fix-Up Idea: Make Sketches

If you are having trouble gathering information, read the folk tale with a partner. Before you begin reading, take a piece of paper and divide it into 6 equal parts. In the first column, describe what Robin Hood looks like in the picture on page 74. Then read the folk tale aloud, stopping at the end of each column to draw a picture that summarizes what you have just read. Stop and sketch after you read each of the five columns in the story.

After Reading

Compare What You Gathered to What You Knew

After reading the story, discuss what actions Robin Hood took. Then compare what you knew about Robin Hood before you read to what you learned in the story. Were you able to guess some of Robin Hood’s actions? What things did you guess and what things did you learn? Tally the actions and motivations you knew, which ones you learned more about, and which ones were new to you. Finally, talk about how Robin Hood’s actions and motivations provide evidence of his heroism.
