Description. A description gives a picture in words of a character, object, or scene. Descriptions make use of sensory detailswords and phrases that describe how things look, sound, smell, taste, or feel. As you read Joyriding, notice the many sensory details and list them under the headings LOOK, SOUND, SMELL, TASTE, and FEEL.
Characterization. Characterization is the act of creating or describing a character. Writers create characters in three major ways: by showing what characters say, do, and think, by showing what other characters say about them; and by showing what physical features, dress, and personality the characters display. The author of Joyriding uses all three techniques in characterizing the two boys in this story.

Sports Connection. Cross-country is a long-distance running sport in which competitors run a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) on an outdoor course (instead of on a track). Cross-country competitions occur on the high school, college, and amateur levels.
Individuals have many skills and talents. They may range from writing music, creating works of art, or playing a certain game to singing or dancing or acting, surfing the Internet, cooking, swimming, or solving puzzles. Sociologists and psychologists are now studying the outcomes of how people approach their skills and talents. For example, some people perform a skill or talent for the simple pleasure of doing so, while others work hard at the same skill or talent in order to excel. Be on the watch for news on these studies and think about how it might apply to you and your own skills and talents.
As you read, find examples of these techniques and record them on a graphic organizer like the one shown below.
