Preview the nonfiction story “The Face of the Deep Is Frozen” by reading the Prereading information on page 153 and looking over the pictures and captions that appear throughout the story. Then create a story web like the one on page 153 to keep track of the real people, places, and events in the story. Write the chapter title, “The Face of the Deep Is Frozen” in the center of a hexagon. As you read, add branches that describe the setting and key events.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two pages of the selection aloud. What do you learn about Antarctica in this section? Add branches to your chart that describe what you learn.
2. Continue reading the story on your own. Continue adding branches to your chart as you read. Each branch should describe the setting or what Shackleton and his men did.
If you and your partner are having a difficult time filling in the chart, read the story column by column. Read the Guided Reading Questions in each column aloud before reading the column.
Find a partner and compare story webs. Then use your story webs to summarize what happened in the story and what Antarctica was like. Share your summaries with the class.
