Read the Art Smart on page 163, look over the picture on pages 164–165, and discuss the pictures on pages 167 and 171. Close your eyes and listen as your teacher reads the first few paragraphs of “Pompeii” aloud. Picture what Pompeii looks like today and what it looked like back in AD 79. Share your mind pictures with the class. How did viewing the artwork affect your mind pictures?
Continue reading the essay on your own, envisioning what Pompeii used to look like and what it looks like today.
If you are having trouble reading and envisioning Pompeii, find a partner. Create a two-column chart that has the columns “Pompeii Then” and “Pompeii Now.” Read the essay together silently, helping each other write down details from the essay that fit in each column.
Break into small groups and discuss what Pompeii used to look like and what it looks like now. Go back to the essay to support your descriptions. Then share your ideas about the old and new Pompeii with the whole class by drawing sketches or writing brief summaries.
