Cultural Connection. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival celebrated in December. During Hanukkah, Jewish people remember the victory of the first Jews who fought to defend their religion against a Syrian king. The festival honors the 165 BC rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem that followed this victory. According to the Talmud, a Jewish text, there was only enough lamp oil to burn for one night during the rededication ceremony, but miraculously it lasted for eight nights. As a symbol of the small amount of oil burned in the temple for eight full days, a menora with nine candles, one extra used for lighting the other candles, is lit during Hanukkah. In addition to the lighting of candles, gifts are exchanged, and holiday games are played by children. A common Hanukkah game is dreidel. The game is played with a toy that revolves like a spinning top.
Science Connection. Goats are related to sheep. Male goats are called rams or billies. Female goats are called does or nannies, and young goats are called kids. Some goats are raised for meat or wool, but most goats are raised for their milk, which can also be used to make cheese. In very hot and very cold climates, goats are more useful for large-scale milk production than cows.
