Anecdote. An anecdote is a brief story, usually told to make a point. The author of Ranch of Dreams includes several anecdotes. As you read, determine which paragraphs are used as anecdotes.
Aim. A writer’s aim is his or her purpose, or goal. People may write with the following aims:
• to inform (expository/informational writing);
• to tell a story, either true or invented, about an event or sequence of events (narrative writing);
• to reflect (personal/expressive writing);
• to share a perspective by using an artistic medium, such as fiction or poetry, to entertain, enrich, or enlighten (imaginative writing);
• to persuade readers or listeners to respond in some way, such as to agree with a position, change a view on an issue, reach an agreement, or perform an action (persuasive/argumentative writing)
Although writers can have more than one aim in a given piece of writing, one is usually more important than the others.

• The Fund for Animals, founded in 1967 by Cleveland Amory, is headquartered in New York. Using the mottoes “We speak for those who can’t” and “Animals have rights, too,” the Fund has far-reaching influence in protecting animals. Among the Fund’s many victories are passage of the federal Airborne Hunting Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act (our nation’s strongest wildlife protection law).
• The world-famous Black Beauty Ranch in eastern Texas is operated by The Fund for Animals. This 1,430-acre refuge is home to many hundreds of animals—from chimpanzees to burros to elephants. Here, free from harassment and harm, animals get a helping hand and healthy food.
