Read the Prereading information on page 350. Then think about presents you have received recently. What is a good present? What is a bad present? What kind of presents would you give to someone you liked?
As you read, write down things in each stanza that the speaker wants his “bonny lass” to bring him. Visualize what each item looks like.
If you are having difficulty writing down what the speaker wants, find a partner and read the poem aloud. Help each other understand what the lines mean by reading the Guided Reading Questions and the footnotes.
Look at the Graphic Organizer on page 350 and sketch what the speaker is saying in each stanza. Do you think the speaker really expects to get the things he asks for? What is the speaker’s overall message? Does he want the “bonny lass” back?
