Before Reading

Build Background Knowledge

Carefully read the Prereading information on page 362 and About the Author on page 366 to determine why Dizzy Gillespie wrote his memoir on bebop. Write this purpose in your notebook: To show us how bebop developed. Keep this purpose in mind as you read.

During Reading

Gather Information

With a partner, read the story, taking notes on how Gillespie developed bebop. Help each other write down what you learn about Gillespie and bebop.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Short Sections

If you are having difficulty taking notes about the history of bebop, read the remarks by each musician separately. After you read what each musician says about bebop, read the Guided Reading Questions and summarize each musician’s remarks.

After Reading

Organize Your Information

Share what you learned about bebop. Help your teacher create a Graphic Organizer like the one on page 362, listing ways that the musicians in the memoir describe bebop.
