Before Reading

Create a T-Chart

Before reading this fairy tale, read the title and skim each page, examining the pictures and reading any text that catches your eye. Next, read the Prereading information on page 411. Then create a two-column T-Chart for keeping track of predictions as you read. Label the first column “Stopping Point”; label the second column “Prediction.” You may write down four predictions about the story on this chart. To make your first prediction, predict what may happen in the fairy tale. In the Stopping Point column, write “Before Reading.” Write your prediction in the Prediction column.

During Reading

Complete Your T-Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three pages of the story aloud. When your teacher stops reading at the top of page 416, make another prediction about what will happen next. Place this prediction in your chart, and jot down brief notes about what has happened in the story so far.

2. Read to the big N on page 417. What do you think will happen next? Write down your prediction in the chart, and jot down more notes about story events.

3. When you reach the end of the tale, summarize the story and evaluate your predictions. Were you able to guess any of the events in the fairy tale?

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you are having difficulty making predictions about story events, find a partner and use the Guided Reading Questions. Read and answer each question as you come to it.

After Reading

Evaluate Your Predictions

Compare the predictions you made to predictions other students made. Did everyone make the same predictions? Which predictions were correct? What things in the story or things that you know about fairy tales helped you make your predictions?
