Joseph Bruchac (b.1942) often draws on his Native American (Abenaki) heritage in his writing and storytelling. He has written several books of folk tales, including Thirteen Moons on Turtle's Back. His original stories and poems have appeared in more than 400 periodicals and anthologies. He has won several prizes, including one for a storytelling tape of traditional Abenaki tales and another for his work in promoting children's literature. Besides being a poet and writer, Bruchac is editor and publisher of a literary magazine. He lives in Greenfield Center, New York.
