Personification. Personification is a figure of speech in which something not human is described as if it were human. “The Singing, Springing Lark” contains many uses of personification. As you read, look for the uses of personification.

Folk Tale and Fairy Tale. A folk tale is a story passed by word of mouth from generation to generation. A fairy tale is a type of European folk tale containing supernatural events and often imaginary creatures such as elves, giants, fairies, dragons, and animals with human qualities. Fairy tales often are set in medieval times (also called the Middle Ages, from about 500 to 1350).

• “The Singing, Springing Lark” is a folktale that includes enchanted characters, supernatural events, and magic spells.

Cultural Connection. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, known as the Brothers Grimm, were the first collectors of folklore to recognize that folk tales can be a source for the scientific study of the culture that produced them.

• The Grimm brothers noted great similarity in themes and characters among German and other European folktales. Later folklorists discovered resemblances between European folktales and those of other continents.
