Reader's Toolbox
Aim. A writer’s (or speaker’s) aim is his or her purpose, or goal. People may write or speak with the following aims:
• to inform (expository/informative writing);
• to tell a story, either true or invented, about an event or sequence of events (narrative writing);
• to reflect (personal/expressive writing);
• to share a perspective by using an artistic medium—such as fiction or poetry—to entertain, enrich, or enlighten (imaginative writing);
• to persuade readers or listeners to respond in some way, such as to agree with a position, change a view on an issue, reach an agreement, or perform an action (persuasive/argumentative writing).

As you read “The Cow of No Color,” look for evidence that helps you determine the aim or aims of the tale.

Suspense. Suspense is a feeling of anxiousness or curiosity. Writers create suspense by raising questions in the reader’s mind and by using details that create strong emotions. As you read “The Cow of No Color,” notice how suspense is created. When do you feel anxious or curious? What questions are raised in your mind? What details create strong emotions?

Reader's Resource

History Connection. Africa has a rich and varied oral literature, which has grown since the beginnings of African societies and continues to flourish today. Many African folktales draw on the value systems of African cultures—a strong work ethic, the powers of beauty, perseverance, peace, harmony, and humor. Storytelling in Africa was a way not only of entertaining but also of passing on history, values, and family traditions.
