Read the title and the Prereading information on page 493. Discuss the definitions of superstition and omen. Do you believe in superstitions and omens? Why, or why not? Share superstitions and omens you have heard about. Help your teacher create a list of superstitions and omens on an overhead or chalkboard.
Listen as your teacher reads the first column on page 495. When your teacher stops reading, make a Graphic Organizer like the one on page 493 for each of the superstitions discussed in the column by writing the name of the superstition in one circle and connecting it to other circles containing details about the superstition. Then read the rest of the article silently, creating Graphic Organizers for each superstition as you read.
If you are having difficulty creating the Graphic Organizers, answer the Guided Reading Questions in each section of the article. The Guided Reading Questions will lead you to a description of each superstition.
Look over your Graphic Organizers. What new things did you learn? Write a summary of what you learned about superstitions and omens. Share your summary with the class.
