Before Reading

Preview

In a small group, read the title and look at the picture on page 515. Then read the Prereading information on page 514. Brainstorm ideas about what you think the story is going to be about.

During Reading

Use Guided Reading Questions

Read the story with your group, stopping to read and answer the Guided Reading Questions as you read. Help each other understand story events. If you are understanding the story and feel you don’t need to be asking yourself questions as you read, you may read the story without using the Guided Reading Questions.

Fix-Up Idea: Reread

If you are having difficulty answering the Guided Reading Questions, read the story with a partner. Use the following steps:
• read the text silently
• read a Guided Reading Question silently
• reread the text near a question silently
• answer a question silently
• verify an answer with your partner aloud
• continue reading silently

After Reading

Create a Plot Diagram

Have your group write down answers to the Guided Reading Questions. Then make a list of story events, and add the events to a plot diagram like the one on page 512. Share your diagram with the class, and explain how you decided to place story events in your diagram.
