Before Reading

Preview the Vocabulary Words

In a small group, make a list of the vocabulary words and their definitions. Then try to create a story about dogs and wolves that uses all of the vocabulary words.

During Reading

Use What You Know about the Words

Read the story, using what you have learned about words in the story to understand what life is like for Arctic dogs and wolves. If you forget the meaning of a word or phrase, use the definitions in your word list and at the bottom of each page.

Fix-Up Idea: Visualize

If you are having trouble understanding events in the story, find a partner. Each of you should read the story silently, making a movie in your minds about the life of Arctic wolves and dogs. Read the first page of the story twice. When you find sections of the story that describe Maktuk and Arnuk, read those sections aloud to each other, picturing what each character looks like and what each is doing. Then create a list of the characters’ names. When each character is introduced for the first time, write down the name and reread the description of the character, imagining what the character looks like. Then write down a brief note that describes the character. Continue reading and picturing the events in your mind until you reach the end of the story, jotting down notes about the characters as you go.

After Reading

Illustrate Story Events

Get together with your group from the Before-Reading activity and summarize what life is like for the wolves in the story. Then illustrate one of the scenes from the story. Go back to the story and reread the scene before you illustrate it. Write a brief paragraph that describes your illustration. Use at least two of the vocabulary words in your description.
