Before Reading

Find a Purpose

Read “I, Hungry Hannah Cassandra Glen…” to find out what the main characters are like. First, read the Prereading information on page 537.Then browse through the story, looking at pictures and captions, and create a chart like the one on the bottom of page 537. In your chart, write down examples of how the narrator describes Hannah and Crow.

During Reading

Learn More about Hannah and Crow

Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the story. When your teacher stops reading, fill in what Crow calls Hannah. One example has been given for you on page 537. Crow calls Hannah “a dreamer.” Continue reading the story, filling in the chart with examples of how the author describes the main characters.

Fix-Up Idea: Visualize

If you are having difficulty filling in the chart, draw pictures of the characters instead. Feel free to change your drawings as you learn more about the characters. Add objects to the drawing that illustrate some of the things that Hannah and Crow do. You can even add word balloons that illustrate what they say.

After Reading

Reflect on the Characters
