Before Reading

Preview

With a partner, fill in a Prediction Chart as you read. Previewing the story will make it easier for you to make predictions. Look at the pictures, read the first paragraph of the story, and answer the Guided Reading Question in that paragraph. Then, make three predictions, or guesses about what will happen, in the box labeled “Guesses.” Add your reasons for making the guesses in the “Reasons” box.

During Reading

Add Information to Your Prediction Chart

Now read the story with your partner. Take turns reading to each other. Fill in any evidence that will support your guesses as you read.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud

If you and your partner are having difficulty filling in your Prediction Charts, start reading the story aloud. You do not have to read the whole story aloud, but you should read the beginning aloud, and read aloud any sections that are causing you difficulty.

After Reading

Share Your Prediction Chart

When you and your partner have finished reading the story, summarize your Prediction Charts. Then compare your predictions to what others predicted. Go back and reread sections that support your predictions. Then reread sections of the story that contradict your predictions.
