Write Down Your Reactions

As you read the story, write down your reactions and feelings. Take notes about things in the story that remind you of other things you know. For example, when the author writes about Jamaica on page 563, you might write down that you visited Hawaii once and that Jamaica sounds like Hawaii.

Fix-Up Idea: Visualize

If you are having difficulty writing down your reactions, read with a partner and try visualizing instead. Create visual snapshots in your mind of what you are reading about. Share your snapshots with your partner. Discuss how each of you picture events in the story as you read.
