Before Reading

Preview

Read the Prereading information on page 582 and look at the pictures throughout the story. Then discuss museums you have visited. What kind of art have you seen? Have you seen any artwork like the picture on pages 583, 588, or 590? What kind of art do you like?

During Reading

Visualize

Begin reading the story. As you read, picture in your mind what is happening in the story, focusing on descriptions of the characters and what they do. Reread the first three paragraphs to get a clearer picture of who the main characters are. Then read the rest of the story, picturing what the characters do and say. Use the Guided Reading Questions to help you picture parts of the story that may be confusing by reading a question and visualizing the answer.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you are having difficulty making a mind movie, use the Guided Reading Questions with a partner. Read together silently, read a question, discuss the answer, and then take turns recording the answers.

After Reading

Summarize Your Mind Movie

Summarize your mind movie. Then choose one scene or character from the story that stands out in your mind. Draw a picture or write a paragraph that describes how you imagined that scene or character. When you are finished, share your picture with your partner. Compare and contrast the images you created with those of your partner.
