Look at the picture and the title of the poem. What do you think the poem will be about? Write down your predictions.
Break into small groups of three to four people. Choose a Reader, Recorder, and Speaker. The reader will read the poem to the group. Others will listen and follow along as the Reader reads. As you listen, think about what is happening in the poem.
If you are having difficulty understanding the poem, have your group reread the poem stanza by stanza. Help each other understand what each stanza means by rephrasing each before going on to the next.
Compare your original predictions to what you learned as it was read. Were your predictions correct? If they were not, does that mean your predictions were incorrect? How does predicting help you understand the poem? Have the Recorder summarize your evaluations of your predictions. Have the Speaker share your summaries with the class.
