Repetition. Repetition is more than one use of a sound, word, or group of words. Repetition is used in poetry to create rhythmic effects. It also is used to emphasize ideas. What examples of repetition are found in “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”?

Rhyme and Slant Rhyme. Rhyme is the repetition of sounds at the ends of words. A slant rhyme is a near rhyme in which the sounds are almost but not exactly alike, like in green sleeve. What rhymes can you find in this poem? What slant rhymes can you find?

• Stress resulting from threatening or unfamiliar situations can have a major effect on mental health. Milder stress-related symptoms might include a headache, a cough, or a rash, while more severe stress-related symptoms might include stomach ulcers and high blood pressure. Learning how to relax as well as taking the time to exercise and rest sufficiently have been identified as important techniques for handling stress and helping to maintain mental and emotional health.

• Anxiety is a feeling of dread or worry that can be related to stress or difficult situations. Anxiety differs from fear in that it is not closely associated with any one thing. Fear of the dark is a common fear in young children that usually disappears with time. Responding to dangerous or frightening situations requires courage or fearlessness. Being able to face one’s fears is the first step in overcoming them. People have many different ways of overcoming or dealing with their fears.
