Before Reading

Create a Chart

Look at the poems and read the Prereading information on page 670. Then create a Graphic Organizer like the one on page 670.

During Reading

Fill In Your Chart

Listen as your teacher reads each poem aloud. Then reread each poem silently, looking for sensory details, or details that appeal to one of your senses. Write these details in the first column of your chart. Write down how the details make you feel in the second column of your chart.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud

If you are having a difficult time filling in your chart, find a partner and read the poems aloud to each other again, stopping each time you read a detail that appeals to one of the five senses.

After Reading

Summarize Your Chart

Write a brief summary of the information in your chart. Share your summary with the class.
