Read the title and Prereading information on page 696, and look at the pictures throughout the play. Then write the names of the characters listed on page 697 in your notebook. As you read the play, jot down words that describe each of the characters. Try to form pictures in your mind of each character.
1. Listen as volunteers read the beginning of the play aloud. As volunteers read the parts of the King and the Chancellor, jot down things that you learn about each of them and what you learn about the Princess Camilla.
2. Read the rest of the play silently on your own, writing down descriptions of the characters. Make a mind picture as each character enters the story. Allow your mind picture to change as you continue to read the play.
If visualizing is not working, use the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes on the bottom of each page to help you understand the play in a different way. Insert the vocabulary or footnote definitions into the part of the text you are reading, and then reread that part of the play a second time.
Participate in a class performance of the whole play. Your teacher will assign you a role to read for part of the play. Read with a dramatic voice. Think about what you know about the character before you begin to read.
