History Connection. Reconstruction refers to the rebuilding period that followed the American Civil War. Although slavery had ended, many African Americans were forced into sharecropping because they did not have land or jobs. A sharecropper provided farm labor in return for a share in the profits from the crop produced. The landowner provided the land, equipment, animals, and seed, as well as living accommodations for the sharecroppers and their families. The landowner deducted the costs of these things from the share-croppers share of the profits. Often sharecroppers were left with no money or even went into debt.
An entrepreneur is a person who starts and manages a business. The entrepreneur takes financial risk in hopes of making a profit. Madam C. J. Walker was a successful entrepreneur who became a millionaire from her hair-care products.
