Before Reading

Preview the Selection

With a few of your classmates, read the Prereading information on page 748 and look at the photographs included throughout the biography. Then discuss what you know about baseball and baseball players.

During Reading

Use What You Know as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs. As you listen, jot down a few notes about Satchel Paige. Based on your previous knowledge of Paige, how does he fit your expectations?

2. Read the rest of the selection with your group. Pause at the end of each section to discuss what you learned about baseball and Satchel Paige.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have trouble connecting to prior knowledge, use the Guided Reading Questions to keep focused. When you get to a Guided Reading Question, stop and read the question. Then reread the text near the question to find the answer. Write the question and answer in your notebook.

After Reading

Summarize What You Learned

With your group, make a list of what you learned about baseball and Satchel Paige. Write a brief summary of what you learned and present it to the class.
