Preview the selection. First read the Prereading information on page 758 and About the Author on page 764. Then look at the photographs on pages 759 and 764. Begin to create mind pictures of Geronimo and what might happen in his life.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first four paragraphs of the selection aloud. As you listen, pay attention to details that describe people, places, or events. Make a mind movie based on what you hear and what you imagine.
2. Continue reading the story silently on your own. Keep making a mind movie as you read. Stop occasionally to make sketches or to write a brief description of your mind movie.
If you are having difficulty understanding the details of Geronimo’s life, use the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes. Work with a partner to rephrase difficult sentences, using the definitions provided at the bottom of the page.
With a partner, share your sketches and notes and describe more thoroughly what you visualized. If there were parts that were hard for you to visualize, talk about these sections with your partner to see if you can get a clearer sense of them.
