Coherence and Transitions. Coherence is the logical arrangement and progression of ideas in speech or writing. Transitions help create coherence. They are words, phrases, or sentences that connect ideas in writing and help the reader move from one thought to the next.

Image and Imagery. An image is language that describes something that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. The images in a literary work are referred to as imagery. Imagery is widely associated with poetry and fiction, but nonfiction writers use imagery, too. Images make writing more vivid and create a response in the reader. Keep track of images you notice as you read.

• People have always wondered at the worlds that surrounded the Earth. They especially have marveled at the night sky when many celestial bodies, such as stars, the moon, and some planets, were visible. Over the years, people have come up with many explanations about the universe and the bodies within it. This selection focuses on some early ideas.

Science Connection. We now know that there are nine planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. For many years, people believed that the planets revolved around the Earth. Nicholas Copernicus (1473–1543), a Polish astronomer, proved that the planets, including Earth, revolve around the sun. Within our solar system there are also many moons, asteroids, comets, and other matter. Scientists have also discovered other solar systems.
