Before Reading

Make a Plan

Read the Prereading information on page 776. In your notebook, make a chart like the Graphic Organizer on page 776.

During Reading

Write Responses as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the selection aloud. What images do you notice? Write them in your chart. Then identify what sense the image appeals to. Write down the answers to the Guided Reading Questions, too.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding images to your chart. Answer the Guided Reading Questions throughout the selection.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud/Think Aloud

If you are having a difficult time with the selection, work with a partner to read aloud and think aloud. Read a paragraph aloud. Stop and think aloud with your partner about what you have read. What pictures come to mind? What questions do you have? What points do you find most interesting? If there is a Guided Reading Question, work with your partner to answer it. Then have you partner read the next paragraph aloud. Stop again to think aloud. Continue in this way until you have read the whole selection.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, compare the information you wrote in your chart and the answers to the Guided Reading Questions. Summarize the information you collected while reading. Share your summaries with the class.
