Read the Prereading information on page 793. Review the definition for aim on page 785. As you read the article by Hanson-Harding, identify her main idea and decide whether her article is written to inform or to persuade.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two paragraphs of the selection. Keep track of information in a two-column chart. In the left column, list things in the article that persuade. In the right column, list things in the article that inform.
2. Continue reading the article on your own. Keep making notes in your chart.
If you are having a difficult time understanding the article, use the Guided Reading Questions. Stop whenever you come to a Guided Reading Question. Read the question, then reread the surrounding text to find the answer.
Compare your chart with that of a partner. Summarize the information in your charts. Decide what the main idea of the article is and what the author’s purpose for writing the article was.
