about the author

Mary Mitchell is the syndicated etiquette columnist otherwise know as Ms. Demeanor. Mitchell's advice column on manners for children and teens evolved from a class she taught in an urban school. She is also the owner of a corporate training firm in Philadelphia called Uncommon Courtesies. Her company gives advice on business manners in and out of the boardroom and practical etiquette advice for the use of e-mail, faxes, pages, cell phones, and handshakes. Her book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Business Etiquette, reflects these ideas. In her role as Ms. Demeanor, Mitchell has corresponded with children from all over the country and has answered questions about what to do in all kinds of social situations. She compiled her correspondences into a book called Dear Ms. Demeanor: The Young Person's Etiquette Guide to Handling Any Social Situation with Confidence and Grace, from which this selection is taken.
