Illustration. An illustration is a photograph, drawing, or diagram that serves to make a concept clearer by providing a visual example. For example, if you look up the word kite in a dictionary, there may be a picture of a kite to illustrate how it looks. In this selection, how does the illustration of the beads help you in deciding which beads you would choose to order?

Cultural Connection. In Africa, more than in any other part of the world, beads have played an integral role in the daily life of Africans. Even today, beads are worn for protection, for tribal identification, and to indicate status, wealth, power, and age. Before the arrival of traders in the late 1400s, ornaments were crafted from many materials: berries, animal teeth, stones, shell, and bone. After trade began, multicolored glass beads from Bohemia and Venice were traded in Africa for gold, spices, ivory, and slaves.
Cultural Connection. Everyone has seen Native American beadwork in earrings, necklaces, watchbands, belts, purses, and other items. Because of its popularity, however, American Indian beadwork is often imitated by factories and sold inexpensively. Nevertheless, traditional beading is still done by Native American artisans. For example, they still make beads from bone, sea shells, stone, turquoise, and other semi-precious stones, and the process has not been affected by modern technology. Artisans create most of the finest beadwork only for relatives and as gift giveaways, because of the enormous amount of work that goes into it. For example, to fully bead the upper sleeves of a buckskin dance dress, it takes 20 pounds of tiny seed beads and about a year of work. Women wear these dresses for dancing in a powwowa highly religious and traditional ceremony in some Native American tribes.

If you could make beaded jewelry, which would you choose to make? Why?
