Look at the catalog page and order form on pages 838–839. On page 838, notice the way the text is organized. Notice how different colors and pictures are used to help you understand the information on the page. Preview the form on page 839. What kind of form is it? What is it used for?

During Reading

Use Organizational Features

1. Read the Beads & Bangles Summer Catalog sheet on page 838. Scan the page, and read items of interest. Try to make sense of the page. Which items are new? What choices do you have for different items? Notice how information on each item is organized.

2. Next, move on to the form on page 839. With a partner, discuss the following questions: What kind of information does the form provide? What information does it ask for? Can the customer use a credit card? Where is the company located? Finally, answer the Critical Thinking questions on page 839.

Fix-Up Idea: Connect to What You Know

Have you ever looked at a catalog before? Have you ever ordered from one? Have you ever ordered something online? Think about what kinds of information you would need to place such an order. Look for this kind of information on the catalog page.

How Did Organizational Features Help You?

Imagine you are ordering from the Beads & Bangles Summer Catalog. Order enough beads and cord to make a choker or necklace for a friend. Fill out the order form as accurately as you can. Check your math. Exchange your order form with your partner. Check your partner’s order form and be sure that it is filled out completely and correctly.
