During Reading

Tackle Difficult Vocabulary

1. Read the article with a partner. As you read, try to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words, use the definitions you found before reading, and use the context clues in the text. If you come across a word that you need to know in order to understand the article, look it up in the dictionary.

2. Write each word and definition in your word study notebook. Practice using each word by writing a contextual sentence.

Fix-Up Idea: Create Mnemonic Devices

If you are having a difficult time remembering all of the information, try using a mnemonic device to remember information. For instance, to remember the definition of decibel, which means loudness of sound, you can say to yourself “depth of bells” when you read the word. You can also try using an acronym, a word formed by using the first letter of words in a phrase or list. If you want to remember the list of sensible precautions on page 845 (wear protective devices such as earplugs, do not use firearms, and spend less time in noisy environments), shorten the list to earplugs, firearms, and environment and remember the acronym EFE. Think of a mnemonic device for remembering the parts of the ear on page 842.
