Read the Prereading page carefully. Preview the selection by examining the title, the photographs on pages 28–29 and 33, and the art on page 37. Using the information you have gathered, make one or more preliminary predictions about the selection.
1. Listen as your teacher reads aloud the first page of the story. Have any of the ideas you originally had about the story changed? What do you think will happen next? Write down your new predictions in your notebook.
2. Read the rest of the story on your own. Stop three times during your reading
to make three predictions based on the questions below.
Stop One: Page 31, top of column 2. Predict whether Albert will be a be-er or
a doer.
Stop Two: Page 32, top of column two. Will Mom be able to change Albert?
Stop Three: Page 35, bottom of column two: Has Albert changed?
If you find it difficult to make predictions at any of the stopping points, go back and reread the Guided Reading Questions near the stopping points. Find answers to the Guided Reading Questions and make your predictions.
Look over the predictions you made at the three stopping points. Put a star next to every prediction that you were right about. Put a check next to every prediction where you changed your ideas from a previous prediction. Does it matter if your predictions were right or wrong? Why, or why not? Talk about what clues in the story led you to make the predictions and explain how making predictions affected the reading experience.
