Reader's Toolbox
Setting. The setting of a literary work is the time and place in which it happens. Writers create settings in many different ways, using details to create a sense of a particular time and place. As you read, look for the ways the speaker in each poem conveys a sense of setting.

Imagery. Taken together, the images in a poem or passage are called its imagery. Images are created from language that describes things that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. What does the imagery of “in the inner city” leave you thinking about? How does it differ from the imagery in “The City Is So Big”? You may want to use graphic organizers like the ones to the right to sort your thoughts.

Social Studies Connection. For many decades, people in the United States have been concerned about deteriorating urban—or inner city—areas. In the 1930s, officials developed programs to tackle problems of urban deterioration. Today, these urban renewal programs differ greatly in their approach to these problems. In some, inner cities are completely demolished and rebuilt. In others, people work to restore and rehabilitate buildings and neighborhoods. Some urban renewal programs strive to preserve residential areas, public housing, parks, and playgrounds. Others focus on commercial and industrial development.
