Respond to the Reader’s Journal question. Then look at the illustration on page 114. What would you see, hear, feel, and think if you were in the place pictured in the illustration? Make a mind picture of your experience.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first page of the story. As you listen, picture the setting, the characters, and what is happening. Begin a picture chart. Draw simple pictures of what you see. Write down the page number next to the sketches that you make.
2. Continue reading the story on your own. Keep adding to your picture chart, noting the page number next to each sketch you make.
If you find it difficult to picture things as you read, try refocusing on these passages: page 117, right column, the paragraph just after the Guided Reading Question and page 119, right column, last paragraph. Read the first passage carefully. Imagine you were there. How would the man move? What would you hear? How would you feel watching him? Write a description of what you see, hear, and feel. Add details or use your own words. Do the same for the second passage.
Share your sketches with a partner. Did you choose to sketch similar scenes or events? Did you see them the same way?
