Read the Reader’s Resource carefully. Then set up a chart in your notebook like the Graphic Organizer shown on page 127.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the beginning of the selection. What is the first environmental problem Gore identifies? Write it in your chart. What is the cause of this problem? Write the cause in your chart.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding environmental problems and their probable causes to your chart.
Before reading the selection, preview Words for Everyday Use. Read each word, definition, and contextual sentence carefully. Write your own contextual sentence for each word. Then preview the footnotes. Read each word or phrase and its explanation carefully. As you read, refer back to the footnotes to refresh your understanding of the words. Use context clues to determine the meaning of any other unfamiliar word. If you cannot understand the word using context clues, consult a dictionary.
Review the items you wrote in your chart. Compare your ideas to those of a partner. If you had different responses, refer back to the selection to support your ideas.
