Before Reading

Prepare a Two-Column Chart

An autobiography reflects on a person’s experiences. These experiences show what a person has learned. The author may also teach lessons based on his or her experience. Make a two-column chart by making a vertical line down a page in your notebook. Label the left column “What Ashe Learns.” Label the right column “What Ashe Teaches.” You will fill in the chart as you read.

During Reading

Fill in Your Chart as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the selection aloud. What lessons does Ashe learn or teach in this section? Make a note in your chart.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding notes to your chart about what Ashe learns and teaches.

Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words and Specialized Vocabulary

Review the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes in this selection. Read each word, definition, and contextual sentence carefully. As you read, jot other unfamiliar words in your notebook. Use context clues or word parts to determine the meaning of the word. If you cannot determine the meaning using one of these methods, consult a dictionary.

After Reading

Discuss What You Wrote

With a partner, compare how you filled in your charts. How can you apply one of the lessons Ashe teaches to your own life?
