Before Reading

Gather Information and Make Initial Predictions

Preview the selection by reading the Prereading page carefully, thinking about the title, and looking at illustrations on pages 342 and 347. What do you think the story will be about? Who will the characters be? What is the setting? What is the main conflict or problem? Write down your preliminary predictions before you begin reading.

During Reading

Continue Making Predictions

1. Listen as your teacher reads aloud the first page of the story. When your teacher stops reading, think about what you heard. Does this information fit with the preliminary predictions you made? Adjust your preliminary prediction or make a new prediction based on the beginning of the story. Write down your predictions. Then write the page number and column of the section that prompted your prediction.

2. Read the rest of the story on your own. Keep making predictions and writing them in your notebook.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus

If you are having trouble making predictions, try refocusing on character. Make a chart like the one on page 355. As you read, make notes about Eve, Angel, and Shadow.

After Reading

Assess Your Predictions

Go through your list of predictions. When did you have a good sense about what was going to happen in the story? Share your predictions with a partner. Talk about what clues in the story led you to make the predictions.
