Before Reading

Think About What You Know

Respond to the Reader’s Journal question in writing. Then, with a few of your classmates, discuss your response. Keep these ideas in mind as you read about Lucy’s experience in the story.

During Reading

Use What You Know as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the beginning of the story. What are the first signs that Lucy may have trouble at her job?

2. Continue reading the story on your own. Keep a list of problems Lucy has at her job. How would you react if you were in her situation? What does Lucy learn from her experience?

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have trouble connecting to the story, try using the Guided Reading Questions. These questions will help you identify key passages and information in the story.

After Reading

Reflect on Your Experience

With your group from the Before-Reading activity, discuss Lucy’s experience. Are you surprised by how Lucy handled the situation? Why, or why not? Talk about a time when you learned something from a difficult experience.
