Before Reading

Prepare to Write Down the Elements

Make a three-column chart. Title the columns “Character,” “Setting,” and “Plot.” As you read, you will make notes in your chart about these three elements.

During Reading

Write Down the Elements as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two paragraphs. What do you learn about the setting? What do you learn about the characters? What do you learn about the plot? Make notes in your chart.

2. Read the rest of the story on your own. Continue to write down what you learn about each element as you read. For instance, when you meet a new character, make a few notes about what you learn under the column titled “Character.” When you learn something about when and where the story takes place, make notes in the “Setting” column. As events happen in the story, make notes in the “Plot” column about what happens. Jot down your reactions to the characters, setting, and events as well.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus

If you have trouble tracking all of the elements, refocus on one of the elements. For example, just take notes about plot. Write down what happens in the story and your reaction to events in the story.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, discuss your reaction to the story. What is your opinion of the narrator and Dikran? Did anything in the story surprise you? Why is the setting of the story important?
