Before Reading

Make a Sequence Chart

Read about climax in the Reader’s Toolbox on page 432 of your textbook. Set up a sequence chart like the Graphic Organizer on that page.

During Reading

Fill in the Sequence Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first page of the selection aloud. What events do you think are most important? Write them in your sequence chart.

2. Read the rest of the selection on your own. Keep adding significant events to your sequence chart.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have trouble filling in the sequence chart, stop and answer the Guided Reading Questions. They will help you focus on some of the important events in the selection.

After Reading

Review the Sequence Chart

With a partner, review the events in your sequence charts. Work together to identify the climax of the selection. Circle the climax on your charts. Look at your sequence charts to see how the author built up to the climax and what happened after the climax.
