Before Reading

Make a Chart

Read about myth in Reader’s Toolbox on page 473 of your textbook. Prepare to look for questions the myth answers. Make a two-column chart like the Graphic Organizer on page 473.

During Reading

Complete the Chart as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first paragraph of the selection. What natural event is explained in this paragraph? Write a question about the natural world in the left column of your chart. Write the answer in the right column.

2. Continue reading on your own. Keep identifying natural events that are explained by this myth and filling in your chart with this information.

Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words

Before you read, preview the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes. Read each word or phrase and its meaning carefully. As you read, refer back to the notes at the bottom of the page as necessary. If you encounter other words you do not understand, write them down. Use context clues to determine the word meaning. If you cannot understand the meaning from context clues, use a dictionary.
