Before Reading

Make an Actions and Consequences Chart

In your notebook, make an action and consequences chart like the Graphic Organizer on page 500 of your textbook.

During Reading

Complete the Chart as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two paragraphs of the selection. Write actions the people take in the left column of your chart. Write consequences of these actions in the right column of your chart.

2. Read the rest of the selection on your own. Keep adding actions and consequences to your chart.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus

What does it mean to be greedy? Think about things that people do that you consider greedy. Think about stories about greedy characters. What kinds of consequences do these characters face? Keep these ideas in mind as you read the selection.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

Share your completed chart with a partner. What does the myth explain? Summarize the explanation.
