Preview the selection by reading the Prereading page carefully, examining the title and the pull quote on page 587, and looking at the art throughout the selection. Using the information you have gathered, make one or more preliminary predictions about the selection.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the introduction aloud. What do you learn about the setting from this section? about the main character? What predictions can you make based on what you read? Write down your new predictions in your notebook.
2. Read the rest of the story on your own. Stop occasionally to assess your predictions, make new predictions, and write them in your notebook. Write a page number next to each prediction to help you remember what clues helped you make the prediction.
A novella is a relatively long work of fiction. If you are having trouble following this long work, try reading in smaller sections. Read several paragraphs. Then stop to check what you have read. Answer any Guided Reading Questions in the section and summarize what you have read.
Review your predictions. Were you able to predict the ending of the story? How was it foreshadowed? Share your predictions with a partner. Talk about what clues in the story led you to make the predictions.
