Read about imagery, irony, and personification in the Reader’s Toolbox on page 619. Then make a chart like the Graphic Organizer on page 619. As you read, fill in the chart with details from each poem.
1. Listen as your teacher reads “Filling Station” aloud. Pay attention to imagery as you listen. Then go back and read the poem on your own. Fill in the chart using images from the poem. If necessary, read the poem again to gather more details for your chart.
2. Read through “A Deserted Barn” once. Then read it again, focusing on imagery and adding details to your chart. Read the poem another time to gather more images and to find details about personification and irony.
Before you read, preview the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes. Read each word or phrase and its meaning carefully. As you read, refer back to the notes at the bottom of the page as necessary. If you encounter other words you do not understand, write them down. Use context clues to determine the word meaning. If you cannot understand the meaning from context clues, use a dictionary.
Pair each student with a partner to discuss the notes they took about the two poems. Have students work alone or with their partner to write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the two poems.
